I think of this when I drink my water.
Copper Creek, to be more precise, runs through my backyard, cutting a good portion off from access lest one wade through it or braves the precarious damn. Mostly it’s a fairly shallow creek, but when it rains the waters come up more than eight feet, roaring past us with the thunder of a freight train. And with the rain also comes the trash: discarded plastic bags, bottles, cans, diapers, and other, often unidentifiable garbage that people don’t dispose of properly.

Today, the day after the official Earth Day, my friend Fabien Cousteau was here in Collin County talking about the water on our little blue planet. Fabien gave many facts about our waters, like 2.4 million pounds of trash is dumped into our oceans every hour; we depend on the ocean for much of our food supply and many life-saving medicines; the average person in the United States uses twice the water a person in Europe does.

I’ve heard many times that there are giant catfish in Lake Lavon, swimming in the water I will drink. It used to bother me to think of this; of fish in my drinking water. Now I wonder about the garbage that today flows through Copper Creek and tomorrow may swim with the giant catfish in Lake Lavon.
