There are mystical, giant catfish that swim in my drinking water – the3six5′s posterous

(Originally published on the3six5.posterous.com April 24, 2010)
I live on Copper Creek, a spring fed vein of water that cuts through my town. It feeds into Spring Creek, which feeds into Lake Lavon where our drinking water comes from. It has been reported more than once by divers that there are mystical, giant catfish the size of train cars in Lake Lavon.

I think of this when I drink my water.

Copper Creek, to be more precise, runs through my backyard, cutting a good portion off from access lest one wade through it or braves the precarious damn. Mostly it’s a fairly shallow creek, but when it rains the waters come up more than eight feet, roaring past us with the thunder of a freight train. And with the rain also comes the trash: discarded plastic bags, bottles, cans, diapers, and other, often unidentifiable garbage that people don’t dispose of properly.

I think of this when I drink my water.

Today, the day after the official Earth Day, my friend Fabien Cousteau was here in Collin County talking about the water on our little blue planet. Fabien gave many facts about our waters, like 2.4 million pounds of trash is dumped into our oceans every hour; we depend on the ocean for much of our food supply and many life-saving medicines; the average person in the United States uses twice the water a person in Europe does.

I think of this when I drink my water.

I’ve heard many times that there are giant catfish in Lake Lavon, swimming in the water I will drink. It used to bother me to think of this; of fish in my drinking water. Now I wonder about the garbage that today flows through Copper Creek and tomorrow may swim with the giant catfish in Lake Lavon.

I think of this when I drink my water.

the3six5 Project – 365 days…365 points of view

I am so incredibly excited about this project!

Len Kendall and Daniel Honigman, have come up with the genius idea that the story of 2010 should be told by 365 different voices.

Brilliant!

Beginning January 1st, writers from far and wide began telling the story of 2010 from their own personal perspectives. Each writer has been assigned one day to write about. They share their personal point of view of one day. At the end of the year we should have one incredibly interesting story.

I’m Ms. April 23rd and my greatest fear at the moment is that I will have an incredibly boring day that day.

So, of course, thoughts have been running through my head as to whether I should ‘plan’ for something interesting on my day. Maybe I can schedule a meeting with someone really facinating? How about I interview people for a ‘spot’ in my day. Only the most interesting and intillectually stimulating people will be allowed around me that day. After all, if this is going down for posterity I want to be remembered as an interesting chapter in 2010 and not just a footnote.

But perhaps I’m getting carried away. The story as a whole will be much better if simply told the way that it evolves. Mundane or not, life is intriguing. So let the chips fall where they may.

Of course I’ll be terribly put out if Mr. April 22nd happens resolve the issue of world peace on his day.
